Project 365 - 013 Magic Mouse

Project 365 - 013 Magic Mouse

My boyfriend is the best.
Last week, when my parents were over, I talked with them about my current apple mouse. It has a very short cord, and therefor it's not really easy (in an ergonomic way) to use it. I always got stiff shoulders from it. So I talked to my parents about wanting a wireless mouse. And Coen already looked into it with google and found this magic mouse that was perfect for designers to use.
It's not a very cheap one, so I said I would want to safe some money for it and buy it later. But today Coen surprised me. He had bought me this magic mouse as a present, and I am so thrilled with it. You can scroll from left to right and up and down by sliding your finger over the front. And it doesn't show any scrolling ball or button or anything. It's such a cool and smooth design. I am terribly spoiled, haha

The Wonder of the Magic Mouse

The Wonder of the Magic Mouse

It was like walking into a candy store for Apple Junkies! The bright lights, the high energy and all the newest gadgets to enhance my designing pleasure. Just before we were about to depart to devour some California Pizza Kitchen, my eyes fell upon the glorious Magic Mouse! Lo & Behold! The splendor of a sleek and seamless wireless mouse that works on virtually any surface. It responds to my touch to scroll horizontally, vertically and diagonally in any direction without the problematic scrolly ball. All this in one tiny hyper-responsive little device that fits so perfectly under the palm of my hand thanks to the technology of Blue Tooth and the Multi-Touch innovation of the iTouch. It's the world's first multi-touch mouse and Pool is the proud owner of 2 of them to make life that much more efficient.

Pure Magic

This has got to be one of the most beautiful pieces of industrial design to come along in a while. Not to mention how technologically superior it is to anything out there. DROOOL!!
It's also half the price of other blue tooth, hideously designed, PC garbage mice. How does Apple do it?

YIIP Day 306

My old Logitech MX700 and MX1000 wireless mice both died in recent weeks after years of solid use. I picked up a G500 to replace them, and I couldn't be happier. Comfortable, super customizable (it comes with little weights so you can actually adjust the weight of the mouse), and corded so I don't have to worry about charging every day. Let's see if I can keep this mouse for a few years like my previous ones.

Marconi signalling devices

Marconi signalling devices

(centre left) Righi Oscillator or Spark-Gap, 1895. This instrument for generating radio waves was invented by Augusto Righi, Professor at the University of Bologna, who
was influential in directing Marconi's scientific interests. In 1896 Marconi brough this example to England, where he used it in demonstrations for the General Post Office.

(centre right) Coherer Receiver by Guglielmo Marconi, 1896. Marconi used this device
for a famous public demonstration of wireless in London's Toynbee Hall in 1896.
At a public lecture given by William Preece, chief engineer to the General Post Office, whenever Preece switched a transmitter and created an electric spark, a bell rang
on a box Marconi took to any part of the lecture room. There was no visible connection between the two. The demonstration caused a sensation and made Marconi a celebrity.

(lower left) Coherer, 1899. Early research on radio waves used a "coherer" to detect their presence. This was a glass tube containing metal filings that would stick together under the electro-magnetic influence of a radio wave and allow an electric current to flow. This could be registered as a dot or dash on a Morse recorder. This early example was made by Marconi's company in Chelmsford in 1899.

(lower centre) Morse Key, c.1900. This key was used by Marconi during his experiments on tuned circuits at the Haven Hotel, Poole in c.1900. It was the first type of key designed specifically for wireless work.

(lower right) Aerial Tuning Inductance Coil, c.1900.

Marconi magnetic detector

Marconi magnetic detector

Magnetic Detector by Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Co. Ltd, early 20th century.

First patented in 1902, Marconi's magnetic detector was more sensitive than the coherer and became the standard device for receiving spark telegraphic signals between 1903 and 1918 in both ships and shore stations.

It relies on the magnetic effect of the wireless signal on a moving soft-iron band,
and the variations in its magnetism are in turn used to induce electrical currents
which create Morse clicks heard in the headphones.
