I had a very interesting conversation with my fupa (uncle) today (or is it yesterday already?). He spent most of his live in the UK and he is here for a visit. Our conversation revolved around the usual topics of my job, my plans, Dhaka traffic jam, corrupt politicians and finally to the holy grail of any Bangladeshi conversation: What's wrong with our country? According to him, our biggest problem is that we don't know who we are. We are in a permanent state of identity crisis. And unless we don't know who we are, we are going no where.
I silently agreed with him without getting into any debate (very unlike me). In the back of my mind, I was contemplating the irony. I was talking about identity crisis at a time when I have finally stopped thinking about it. Throughout my life I struggled with the question of who I really am? Where do I come from? I searched for answers into the past of my family, my religion, my race, into the color of my skin and even psychology, and what not. I tried to understand what am I here for? What is the meaning of me? And what should I do? I didn't get any conclusive answer that would help me to define my existence. Until, finally one day, I just stopped caring.
This identity crisis of mine (or whatever it may be) is slowly becoming my identity.
ps: If you have read it this far, give yourself a pat in the back. Well done! :D
for Project SoulPancake - week 1 - Closely Admire Your Fingerprints
I know who I am and I am comfortable with that. I also don’t have a problem with other people finding out who I am although I do not advertise this. I am easily identified........ My fingerprints are unique; everything I touch can be traced to me. I welcome the responsibility and challenges that goes with such ownership. I have my identity and others can identify with me if they need or want to, it makes no difference. I do not have that choice, I am me.
